Cartiere del Garda is the first paper mill in Europe, as well as one of the very first companies in Italy, to obtain the UNI CEI EN 16001:2009 Certification. This standard defines the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an Energy Management System. It provides a framework for determining the business' energy policy and objectives and for identifying the route to achieving the set goals. The purpose of the EN 16001:2009 is a more efficient and more sustainable use of energy, in general through the initial assessment of energy issues and the management and control of these aspects.
It took Cartiere del Garda only 5 months to obtain the certification. Such a short time frame shows the Company's constant attention to energy and environmental issues over the years. In order to optimise its energy efficiency, Cartiere del Garda has worked with one of the most prestigious research centres in the paper industry (PTS of Munich). Analysis of the production process began in 2004, defining the improvement in energy savings in consumption. These improvements were defined as production standards leading the Company to the first places in Europe. For further improvements, the Mill decided to adopt an Energy Management System for achieving additional improvements through a more structured system.
With this respect, Cartiere del garda defined its own energy objectives: improving the reliability of all measured data including the one relating to steam input energy, increasing the detail of data analysis /monitoring, estimating the energy consumption data for transport of raw material and products, and reducing the electricity consumption in the air-conditioning systems.
These set objectives will see an increased energy efficiency and a 5% reduction of electricity consumption per tonne of product for Cartiere del Garda.
Achieving the UNI CEI EN 16001:2009 certification by the Italian certification body Tuv Italy is another step towards Cartiere del Garda's recognition as an even more socially responsible company with an ethic dedicated to the protection of the environment and the community.
