APAT
Agenzia per la protezione dell’ambiente e per i servizi tecnici - the Agency for Environmental Protection and Technical Services performs nationwide tasks and carries out technical and scientific activities to protect water resources and the soil. It originated from the merger between ANPA (Agenzia Nazionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente the Italian Agency for Environmental Protection) and the Department for National Technical Services of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. APAT is in charge of the preliminary technical analysis for EMAS registration.

APPA
Agenzia Provinciale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (Province of Trento) – Provincial Agency for Environmental Protection.

BAT (Best Available Techniques)
More efficient techniques to obtain a high level of environmental protection. They include ways of design, building, maintenance, management and shutdown of the plant, which are developed to allow their implementation under valid and reasonable conditions from the economical and technical point of view.

BOD5
Biochemical Demand for Oxygen. It indicates the quantity of oxygen used in 5 days for the biological decay of the compounds present in water.

BREF
Document containing information about production processes of the industrial field, associated environmental impacts and on the best available techniques for the prevention or reduction of pollution.

CO
Carbon monoxide.

CO2
Carbon dioxide.

COD
Chemical Demand for Oxygen – a parameter that estimates the quantity of organic substances present in water.

ECOLABEL AND ECOAUDIT COMMITTEE
The EMAS technical committee. It is in charge of executing the tasks established by EMAS regulations.

EMAS (Eco-management and Audit Scheme)
ECC Regulation no. 761/01, 19th March 2001, regarding the voluntary adhesion of the companies belonging to the industrial field to a common system of eco-management and audit. The regulation is applied to each single production site and indicates the requirements of an environmental management system needed for its registration. The institution responsible for registering the production sites in Italy directly depends on the APAT (Agency for environment protection and for technical services), while the verifications of conformity are performed by accredited private institutes. It differs from the Standard ISO 14001:1996 stating the obligation to publish an annual document containing information concerning the environmental performance of the site.

EMISSION
Solid, liquid or gaseous substance released into the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT
Systematic, documented, periodical and objective instrument for managing the performance of the organisation, the management system and the processes for protecting the environment, in order to:

  1. facilitate management control of behaviours that can have an impact on the environment; 
  2. assess compliance with the environmental policy including the environmental objectives and the targets of the organisation.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
“Any modification of the environment which can be adverse or positive, total or partial, consequent to the activities, products or services of an organization” as defined by UNI EN ISO 14001:1996, third paragraph

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)
Part of the general environmental management system including the organisational structure, the planning activities, the responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources to develop, putting into effect, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
Measurable results of the actions taken by an organization for the management of the environmental impacts linked to its activities.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
General criteria and the objectives of an organization regarding the environment, including compliance with all the relevant provisions on the environment and the undertaking to continually improve environment performance; this environmental policy forms the framework for establishing and re-examining the environmental objectives and targets.

(SIGNIFICANT) ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT
Element of an organisation’s activity, product or service, which can interact with the environment or which can have a significant environmental impact.

FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL (FSC)
Non-profit, non-governmental organisation, which includes among its members, social and environmental groups, indigenous communities, consumer associations, forest owners, technicians, certification bodies, timber production and marketing companies.

INDICATORS
Qualitative and quantitative values which link the most considerable effects on the environment to the activities performed by the company.

ISO 14001
International standard, which is acknowledge at national level by the UNI (Italian national Institute of unification), issued in 1996 by the International Standard Organization. It describes the requisites, which must be included by an environmental management system to achieve certification. Accredited private institutions issue the certification.

INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORI ZATION (A.I.A.)

IPPC
ECC/CEA/EC Directive no. 61, 24th September 1996 relative to the integrated prevention and reduction of pollution. It provides for the issue of a single authorization (A.I.A., Autorizzazione Integrata Ambientale, or Environmental Integrated Authorization) for the various environmental elements: air, water, land, waste and noise. The authorization includes the limits the company concerned is to comply with and they are set in consideration of the vulnerability of the surrounding environment.

OHSAS 18001
Regulations relating to an acknowledged system for dealing with Health and Safety at work.

PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes)
The PEFC is a system that enables the mutual acknowledgement of schemes for international or national forestry certification, which have been developed at a local level, based on the requirements of sustainable forestry management and recognised on an international level.

SST
Total Solids in Suspension. They show the quantity of solids suspended in water and are linked to clarity.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Development which produces the maximum benefits for the present generation by maintaining the same standards of living for future generations.

TPP
Thermoelectric Power Plant.

T.U.L.P.
